Date de naissance : 5 décembre 1926
Lieu de décès : Sydney
Date de décès : 5 décembre 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fema MacDonald-Strachan, 89, on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at her home, which was where she wanted to be.
Born in Fourchu on July 3, 1926, she was the first in the family of four children of the late Kenneth and Mary Ann (nee MacLeod) MacDonald.
In her early days, Fema worked at the lobster factory in Fourchu and later, worked in retail at the Metropolitan Store for many years. Fema was very active in the community as an elder in First United Church, on the board of the Investment Property Owners Association of Cape Breton and with the Gaelic Society, as well as spending many hours volunteering for the ladies auxiliary at the Cove Guest Home and Harbourstone Enhanced Care.
Fema was predeceased by the lights and loves of her life, husband, A. Warren MacDonald and son, Warren P. MacDonald, Q.C. She had many years of love and laughter with her second husband, Kenneth Strachan, who also predeceased her.
She is survived by her sister, Christene (Billy) MacLeod, Marion Bridge; brothers, Malcolm MacDonald, Fourchu and A.D. (Joan) MacDonald, Ottawa. Also surviving are nephews, Richard (Debbie) MacLeod, Marion Bridge, Gord (Cheryl) MacDonald, Sydney River and Andy (Karen) MacDonald, Toronto and her beloved grandnieces and nephew, Breanna and Maggie (Richard); Brittany, Jaycee, Emily, Chelsea, Katie and Mitchell (Gord); Kristina, Lindsay and Melissa; great-grandniece, Olivia (Andy). She also cared deeply for and was interested in the lives of all her relatives by marriage to Warren and Kenny’s families, especially their nieces and nephews. Fema is also survived by her chosen son, Shaun Crowe, who has been a true rock of love and support for Fema during many of her later years.
We would like to thank the health care system that has been so supportive over the period of her illness and all those who have helped to care for Fema at home, especially Little Mary.
We were all blessed to have this tremendous lady as a part of our lives. We will miss her smile, the conversation, the laughter and especially her dedication to family.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 10 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Fema’s life will be held at United Heritage Church on Friday, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Interment in Zion Cemetery.
