John Walker of Truro, Nova Scotia, passed away December 10, 2015, at the age of 87. John’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife Mabel and his children Catherine (and Bill), Allan, and Anne (and Alan), and his daughter-in-law Diane. He was predeceased by his beloved son Daniel.
John was a loving grandfather to Tina, John Donald, Danielle, Allana, Alexander, Alex and Luke. He was a proud great-grandfather to Thane, Elyse, Rylen, Cayleb, Kathleen, and little Daniel James. He was also a special uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
The youngest of five children, John was born in Ottawa Brook, Cape Breton, and completed a B.Ed. at St. Francis Xavier University, an M.S.W. at Maritime School of Social Work, and did post-graduate work at Columbia University.
John was a life-long advocate for people with disabilities at the local, provincial, national and international levels. He had a distinguished career as a social worker and as superintendent of the Nova Scotia Youth Training Centre, and made an immeasurable impact on the lives of more than 1,400 students who attended the centre during his 42 years of service.
John contributed his time and talents to many community organizations, including the Victorian Order of Nurses, Community Chest, Children’s Aid Society, Recovery House and the Holy Name Society. He was also a life-long member of the Immaculate Conception Church.
With deep Cape Breton roots and known for his wisdom, warmth and sense of humour, John was a great story-teller and a gracious host. Dedicated to his family, a wide circle of friends and colleagues, and his community, he touched the lives of many people.
Visitation will be at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro on Sunday, December 13th from 2 pm to 4 pm. A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince St., Truro on Monday, December 14th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a local food bank, or the charity of your choice.
