It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Barbara MacNeil, 85, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Dec. 10, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Iona, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Veronica (MacLean) MacKinnon.
Barbara was a devoted member of St. Theresa’s parish, and a member of Breton Quilters and Clan MacNeil. She enjoyed baking her bran bonnach and her famous molasses cookies, that she shared with the whole family. Mom was a gentle, kind soul, who took great care with everything she touched. She loved listening to Cape Breton fiddle tunes and Gaelic music. In the summer, she loved being in the berry fields. Mom, we love you and will carry you in our hearts and souls forever.
Barbara is survived by her children, Rosaire MacNeil, Jacqueline (Bill) Young, Blair (Shauna) MacNeil and David MacNeil, her eight precious grandchildren. She is also survived by her three sisters, Sarah MacVicar, Halifax, Rosemary (Conrad) Poirier, Antigonish, Priscilla O’Toole, North Sydney, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John 'Jack' MacNeil; son, Brian; sisters, Teresa, Vera, Pauline, Rosamond, Eleanor; brother, Aloysius, her special sister-in-law, Katie MacNeil.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2015 at the St. Theresa Church with Fr. Lamey officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
