It is with saddened hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Mary Clarissa 'Chris' Hicks, 93, on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 11, 1922, she was the eldest daughter of the late Allan and Clara (Sutherland) Bedford.
She was a past member of the Sydney Mines Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Seniors Club in Sydney Mines.
She was a devoted mother whose greatest pride was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always eager to share a story about them. She was an avid bingo player for 50 years, where she made many friends. She was also a late night socializer with her companions at the Seniors Complex. Her great joy was being surrounded by family, and her proudest and most delightful moments were attending family celebrations. She left this world with her wit and sharp mind, one of her outstanding characteristics she will always be remembered for.
She is survived by her sons, Billy (Janet), Halifax, Mike (Judy), New Brunswick, Wayne (Wendy), and Lorne (Ann), both of Sydney Mines, and daughters, Florence (John) Hardy, Bras d’Or, Edna (Fred) Kirtz, Ottawa, Tina (Brian) LeBlanc, Big Bras d’Or, Marie (Frank) MacDonald, Sydney Mines, and Dianne Crosby (John Boutilier), Sydney River. Also left to mourn are her sister Edna, Ontario, brother Allan, Newfoundland, 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and her dear friend Sarah Johnston.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband William 'Bill' Hicks, and her dear little girl Clara Marie, brothers, Alec and Michael Bedford, sisters, Christina, Isabel, Shirley, Marguerite, and her son-in-law Andrew Crosby.
Visitation for Chris Hicks will be held in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass celebrating her life will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Holy Family church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris’s memory may be made to Holy Family Parish, or the Sydney Mines Food Bank.
Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
Of all the gifts that life has to offer, a loving Mother is the greatest of them all, as it is the purest love ever known.
