It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of J. Ian Johnston, age 59, of Springhill.
Ian passed away at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in North Sydney, N.S., he was a son of the late LeRoy and Florence (McKinnon) Johnston.
Ian was a firefighter in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving during the Gulf War. He was a member of the Springhill Royal Canadian Legion. A proud Cape Bretoner, he loved his family and his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed socializing, and loved playing darts and cards.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife and best friend Sheree (Weatherbee) Johnston, Springhill; sons Brian (Annette Smith), Springhill, Robin (Jeannie Donaldson), Cole Harbour, N.S. and Kevin, Comox, B.C.; stepdaughters Alisha (Julie) LeBouthillier, Halifax, N.S., Melissa (Michael) Glabay, Glace Bay, N.S.; grandchildren, Trey, Lola, Chase, Caleb, Maddilyn, Brogan and Gabriel; siblings, Marie (Robert) MacQueen, Sydney Mines, Michael (Paula), Sydney Mines, Lloyd (Joanne), Sydney Mines, LeRoy (Terasa), Oxford; several nieces and nephews; and of course his special dog Lily.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother Roy.
Arrangements have been entrusted to AH Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS (902-597-2361) where visiting hours will be held on Monday from 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 at 2 p.m., Rev. Wayne McCarther officiating. The Royal Canadian Legion will provide a reception following the funeral at Browns Funeral Home.
