July 13, 1935 ~ December 7, 2015
Born in 1935 in UK, Carl spent his childhood in Egypt alongside the Suez Canal, where he developed a love of sailing and adventure. After completing a diesel mechanic apprenticeship in Lincoln, he headed to Canada in 1957. Here he found more adventure and a willing participant in Sue, his wife of 56 years.
After stints in Quebec and Kitimat and earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, he settled in North Vancouver in 1966. Here he raised his family, hiked the trails and sailed the waters of Howe Sound with his family on board. When not adventuring, he worked as a consulting engineer around the province.
In 2000, he retired to Gibsons and built a house. Once building was complete, he became an active member of the Gibsons Yacht Club, especially their Learn to Sail program. Carl was happiest cruising with other boat lovers on the club’s annual expeditions.
He will be sorely missed by his family, wife Sue, children Ian (Carolyn), Corky (Jackie) and Daphne (Stevie), and the six grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all those who helped care for Carl during the past six months, particularly the Palliative Care team whose outstanding care and compassion allowed the family to grant Carl his final wish to end his days at home looking out at that wonderful view over the Strait of Georgia.
To celebrate a life well lived, we hope friends and family can gather with us at 2 pm on Saturday, January 23 at Camp Byng on the Sunshine Coast.
