Shirley Margaret Sanders of Trinity Avenue, Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital following a brief illness on Monday, Feb. 1, 2016.
Born in North Sydney on Nov. 7, 1935, she was the daughter of Everett and Marie Gallop.
Shirley spent her younger years in Toronto before returning to Sydney 15 years ago following the death of her beloved husband.
Shirley enjoyed bowling, knitting, watching tennis and loved going to the casino in Membertou.
Always quick-witted, with a sarcastic sense of humour, she loved the time she spent with her family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her three sisters, Pauline Hominick (Tony) of Sydney, Audrey Chisholm, Hudson Heights, Que., and Evelyn Thorn (Jonathan), Montgomery Village, Maryland; three step-children, Andrea Lindsay, Stouville, Ont., Beth Edwards and Margaret Kress, both of Wilmington, North Carolina; several cousins; her much loved nieces, nephews and her best friend and partner in crime, Joan MacKinnon.
Shirley was predeceased by both of her parents, her brother-in-law Bill Chisholm and her husband Ozzie Sanders.
Shirley's remains have been cremated. There will be no visitation and no service at her request. She will make her final journey home at a later date to be laid to rest with husband and mother in Ontario.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of choice.
