Kenneth Grant, age 83, of Gabarus passed away after a lengthy illness on Feb. 9, 2016, in palliative care at Sydney Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was the son of the late Wiley and Elsie (Reid) Grant.
As a young man he travelled to Halifax seeking work. His first job was with the I.H. Mathers steamship company. In 1956 he joined Trans Canada Airlines. Having worked in many capacities within Air Canada he retired in December 1984. From 1985-1989 he worked for Air Canada Reservec as a sales representative for the Atlantic Region and then from 1989-1996 he worked for Gemini as a sales representative for Atlantic Canada, retiring for a final time in 1996.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 61 years June (O’Brien) Grant, his cherished daughter Sherry Edwards (Paul) and his two precious granddaughters Colleen and Kathryn. He also leaves to mourn his four special nieces and one nephew and their families.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Freda Libby and Mildred Gray, brothers in-law Roy Libby and Duncan Gray, Niece Fay Libby and Great nephew Fred Dickie.
Ken was a kind and gentleman who loved his family and home. He made many friends during his lifetime. He was well respected by his peers & co-workers; never a man to criticize but always a man to praise.
The last few years of his illness was made more bearable by the support and compassion of family, friends and neighbours. The food that constantly appeared, mail delivery, snow shoveling, drives to the hockey games, road trips and chats on the veranda, showed just how much he was loved. You could often find him down at the beach in a fish house with the 'beach boys' spinning yarns.
The family would like to thank all who have taken time from their busy lives to visit or call Ken while he was in the Glace Bay General Hospital & Harbourstone Extended Care Facility these past three years; it meant so much to him. A special thank you to our family doctor Dr. James Maclean and all the staff at both facilities who made his homes away from home pleasant, comfortable and reassuring, Ken truly loved you all.
Ken was a member of Bethany United Church in Halifax and an adherent to Zion Wesley United in Gabarus.
Visitation will take place Feb. 12 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexander St., Sydney from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Feb. 13 at Chant’s at 2 p.m.; Nancy Whitney Latham officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
