With sadness we announce the passing of Gail MacCormack, on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Gail was born in Chateauguay, Que., on Oct. 5, 1942 to Bob and Lucille (Doyle) McAuley.
She received her high school diploma before moving on to Miss Brown’s Finishing School and received her college diploma. Gail worked for Air Canada where she met and fell in love with Bill the love of her life. They married in 1963 and were blessed with two children Brent and Kellie.
Gail loved life and really enjoyed having a good belly laugh. She especially loved to play crib and “bish”. Her best moments were when she played against Rubin Skinner and Francis Chishlom at Branch 53 Legion.
Gail’s second love was Cape Breton, while on a visit with Bill’s parents in 1961, she fell in love with everything Cape Breton had to offer. During that visit she met her life-long friend Thelma MacLellan. Back in Montreal she said that some day I am moving to Cape Breton. In 1967 Bill managed a transfer to Sydney Airport, they settled in Glace Bay and the rest is history.
While visiting friends in Big Harbour, Gail made up her mind that this was the place to retire, so in 1989, they packed up and moved to Big Harbour and loved every minute of it. Gail enjoyed ice fishing and sometimes she even caught fish.
Gail was employed with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney and retired in 2002. Bill and Gail moved back to Glace Bay in 2014. Gail enjoyed Irish music, watching her beloved Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Blue Jays. She also enjoyed watching curling.
Gail is survived by her husband Bill, and her pride and joy Brent (Lilly Zhao), Toronto and Kellie (Wayne) MacKenzie, Calgary; grandchildren Allison, Michael, Abigail and Allister; brothers Ross, Brian, both of Montreal.
She was predeceased by her parents Bob and Lucille, and her parents-in-law, Elmer and Sarah.
A memorial service will take place in the summer of 2016.
Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
