Ruby MacKINNON
MacKINNON, Ruby Mildred
June 23, 1917 - June 12, 2016
Mom passed to the next life surrounded by family in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, at the age of 98.
Born in Boston, Mass., she was aptly named. She was indeed a gem.
Ruby lived in Pictou for almost a century with the exception of time spent in Boston while attending The Wilfred Academy of Hair Design. She was among the graduating class of Pictou Academy in 1934.
In 1940 Ruby married Borden “Mutt” MacKinnon and later they became proud parents of five children, Wayne (Vicki), Bible Hill; Marg (Wayne) MacQuarrie, Bible Hill; Beth (Jim) Nicholson, Pictou; Lee (Charlie Heighton), Cape John; and Jean (Craig) MacDonald, Pictou, with whom she resided.
Grammie cherished her eight grandchildren, their spouses, nine great grandchildren, special cousin, Sadie MacCallum, and her many nieces and nephews. She bonded with her grandchildren in a way that was beyond reproach. Her love and compassion for the family dogs was mutual. They adored Grammie.
Ruby was predeceased by her parents, husband and by her great granddaughter, Jeana Mae English.
Small in stature, Mom was huge in strength. While raising a family and caring for boarders (extended family), she maintained a successful hairdressing career. She was compassionate about family and friends and leaves a legacy of friendship, laughter, traditions and music. As a member of St. Andrew's Church, Pictou, the church was an integral part of her life.
A private family committal will be held at Seaview Cemetery on June 19 and in honour of her exceptional life, a celebration will be held at a later date.
Family flowers only please.
Donations to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Muscular Dystrophy Association, The Children's Wish Foundation or a charity of choice would be appreciated.

One short sleep past,
We wake eternally
And death shall be no more.
Death, Thou shalt die.’
