Passed peacefully on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the Health Science Centre in his 99th year. Predeceased by his parents William and Lilly Simmonds; his brother Bill (sisters-in-law Marjorie Moore and Lillian Gulliford), sister Ruth (brothers-in-law Charles Pearcey and Bill Hillyard); his mother and father-in-law Kenneth and Minnie Gillingham; brothers-in-law Jack (Della), Fred (Anne), Gerald, and Roy (Mildred) Gillingham, and sister-in-law Margaret Woolridge. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his beloved wife of 69 years Joan (Gillingham); his children: Peter (Barbara), Pamela Hayward (John), Paul, and Karen Collins (John); grandchildren: Adam (Heather), Matthew (Lee Ann), David (Gillian), and Sara Simmonds, Michael Hayward (Lora Abbott), Deborah (Hayward) Chaulk (Zak), Gerald (Shelly), Kenneth, and Jonathan (Nicole) Collins; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Ern Woolridge; sister-in-law Florence Gillingham, and many nieces and nephews. At his request, cremation has taken place. Visitation at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John's on Monday, July 4, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Doug's life will be held in the Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin Church on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 2 p.m. with inurnment to follow in the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road.
