John MacLeod

John K. MacLeod, age 95, passed away peacefully with family by his side. Born July 14, 1921 and reborn September 13, 2016. Raised in “The Mill Pond”, Boularderie, he was the son of the late Dan K. and Murdena (Kerr) MacLeod. As a young man he volunteered for overseas service in the 2nd World War. On his return, he farmed in the Millpond raising a young family and working construction. He often said the best decision he and Norma ever made was moving to New England to offer their young family better opportunity in life. He and Norma returned to Cape Breton in 1984 and built a retirement home on the Bras d’Or Lake in Boularderie East. There they enjoyed over 30 years, happy years until health became an issue.
John is survived by his wife of 75 years, Norma (MacLeod) MacLeod; his children, Rev. Dr. Kenneth (Marilyn), Pictou County, Donna MacLeod Miller, Halifax, Judi Morrison, Ashland, MA, Sandy (Dorothy) Marlboro, MA and Kevin, Ottawa. Surviving also is his sister, Mae MacKenzie; his brother, Donald; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews and treasured “grandfather” to Natasha. John was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Betty and Mary; brothers, Allan and Duncan; daughter-in-law, Maria; son-in-law, George and granddaughter, Sheryl Elizabeth. A kind and gentle man of faith, John was a long standing member and elder of St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or. He was a dedicated and proud member of Branch 8, Royal Canadian Legion in Sydney Mines. The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick O’Grady for his years of compassionate care and friendship. Our gratitude also to the nursing staff of the Veteran’s Wing at Harbourview Hospital in Sydney Mines. Visitation for John will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral service to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Presbyterian Church with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating.
