Bruce Garland
Date de décès : 2 novembre 2016
Bruce Munroe Garland passed away peacefully in the quiet of the night of November 2, 2016. He was born during a prairie thunderstorm on August 14, 1932 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, the only son of Thomas and Mabel Garland. He was raised on the family farm south of Success, SK and attended school at Orillia School, Success and Swift Current Collegiate Institute before farming with his Dad. Bruce married the love of his life, Irene Gledhill, on February 6, 1954 at the First United Church in Swift Current. They raised their family and farmed in the Success area until moving to Swift Current in 1990. He continued farming with his son Bill the next few years. Bruce never lost interest in the farm and called Bill almost daily for an update of the day's work. His last day he asked if Bill was finished combining. It seems he was waiting to hear that the work was done before taking his leave. Bruce enjoyed playing hardball and curling in his early years and learned to play piano and saxophone as a young boy. He took flying lessons in the 60's and did his solo flight, but gave it up due to responsibility of family and farm. He was an avid fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Blue Jays. Bruce and Irene were season ticket holders to the Swift Current Bronco games for several years and enjoyed the action on the ice as well as the friendship of others in attendance. Bruce enjoyed summers at the family cabin at Clearwater Lake and time spent there with family and friends. Bruce and Irene travelled to parts of the USA, including several trips to Hawaii. He was a lifetime Mason and enjoyed his role in the clown team of the Shriners. He had dogs his entire life, and after Irene passed, took great comfort in his pup, Tupac, who was his constant companion. Bruce embraced the world of technology and had one of the first home computers in the 80's. He spent many hours online reading news, sports and weather, keeping in touch with family and friends as well as researching family genealogy, going back many generations. Bruce took great pleasure in teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always brought a smile to their faces. Irene had many health issues the last few years of her life, and Bruce was dedicated to looking after her at home, as well as when she moved to long-term care. Bruce had a dry sense of humor, strong work ethic and commitment to family, and will be lovingly remembered. Bruce is survived by his children, Heather (Wayne) Christensen, Everley (Allan) Small, Rodney (Wendy) Garland, Barbara (Michael) McCarthy, David (Karen) Garland, and William (Patty) Garland; grandchildren, Lindsay (Ryan) Jackson, Kaare (Jodi) Christensen, Ryan (Jennifer) Small, Landon (Rheanna) Small, Jamie (Christy) Garland, Christopher (Stephanie) Garland, Jennifer (Tim) Berg, Erin (Bryan) Acaster, Alicia McCarthy, Scott (Charisse) Garland, Kellie (Kelly) Dickie, Kathleen (Neil) Jesske, Sheila (Joseph) Daraio, Kyle Garland, and Andrew Garland; great-grandchildren, Daryn, Holden, and Eva Jackson, Loki, Julianna, Madea and Izabella Small, Brooke Small, Devyn and Ashley Garland-Hunter, Payton and Ella Berg, Easton and Paisley Garland, Mia and Lauren Acaster, Lily Garland, and Evan Jesske. God has you in his keeping; we have you in our hearts. A private family service was held from the Chapel of the First United Church on November 12, 2016, with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. Bruce's life history was read by Wayne Christensen. The service ended with the playing of Bruce's favorite song, "Sentimental Journey". Interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK. Memorial Donations in memory of Bruce may be made to Stars Ambulance, 2640 Airport Road, Regina SK S4W 1A3 or Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1738 Quebec Avenue, Unit 26, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9.
