NEW GLASGOW - Theresa Anne “Terry” “Channy” Gladney, age 62, of New Glasgow, formerly of Hopewell, passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle with cancer at the palliative care unit on Dec. 11, 2016. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Phyllis MacLean of New Glasgow.
She resided at North Ave, New Glasgow during her younger years until she moved and resided in Hopewell for 24 years.
Terry was a devoted mother of 3 children and a very proud grandmother of 7; Emily, Connor, Landon, Kale, Kade, Aiden and Ayla, whom she liked to call her “Hooligans.” Her passion was spending time taking them for walks, to the beach or park, cheering them on at all sports functions, or any other crazy things she could think up to do with them. Her determination to “fight this cancer” was inspiring to so many people but would not have been possible without her large support system, including her immediate family and her 6 supportive siblings.
When not spending time with her family, she would be found on the ball field where she became one of Nova Scotia’s premier softball players. Her skills as a short stop were so well recognized in the province that she also had the opportunity to play in the Canada Games. As an adult, she was a dedicated teammate of numerous competitive and recreational ball teams and travelled across the provinces. She was known for her fast skills and fun-loving demeanour on and off the field. She was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for her outstanding accomplishments in the game she loved so much. She was also an active volunteer in various organizations throughout her years in the community.
She worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Stellarton for 28 years until she retired. She was a courteous, outgoing, compassionate employee who always had a contagious smile on her face when she greeted each of her customers. Some waited in line just to see her.
Terry was an active member in the Roman Catholic religion of St John’s Church Parish in New Glasgow.
Because of her generosity, considerate personality and unconditional love, she will be missed by her 3 children: Robbie (Lori) Gladney, Debbie (Kent) Mason and Lisa (Chris) Gladney; her 6 siblings: Doane (Ann) MacLean, Phillip (Cindy) MacLean, Kevin (Joan) MacLean, Debbie (Millan) Fraser, Mark (Marie) MacLean and Allie MacLean. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews and countless amounts of dear friends she has gathered throughout her life. But, most importantly, her beloved 7 “Grand babies,” who will continue to love “their Channy” unconditionally despite her passing.
The family would like to pass along a special thanks to the nurses at palliative care, Dr. Farrell, Dr. Kwaznik and Rhonda, and the VON, and countless amounts of friends offering their support over the years.
Cremation has taken place. The family will be accepting visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow. Burial in the Holy Cross Cemetery, with small reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Family flowers only.
