With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of George Joseph Jackson, 91, of Sydney River, on Friday, January 6, 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Russell and Edna (Moules) Jackson. George is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Jimmy) Nicoletopoulos, Sydney and Wendy (Bob) Pierre, Dutch Brook; granddaughters, Angela Nicoletopoulos and Kari (John) Couture; grandson, Terry (Jen) Nicoletopoulos; great-grandsons, Andrew and Reece Couture; great-granddaughter, Athena Nicoletopoulos. Also surviving are his sister, Mildred Ross, Sydney and brother, Roy (Lee), Ontario.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann ‘Nancy’ (Head); sisters, Lillian ‘Sis’ Burke, Sadie Ryan, Mary ‘Rita’ Hussey and his brother, Edward.
George retired from Brookfield/Scotsburn Dairy, after 42 years of service as a refrigeration technician. He was a kind and gentle man who had a zest for life, music and the great outdoors. In his younger years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In later years, scenic drives to various parts of the island were a favorite pastime for him and Mom. There were never enough hours in the day for him to do all he wanted to do. He could often be found tinkering in his workshop or fixing or rebuilding some piece of machinery. From the tiniest transistor to a large farm tractor, nothing was ‘unfixable’. George was a proud ‘lifetime’ member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers’ Association. Music was always an important part of his life and he often had sessions in his home. Cremation has taken place. At his request, there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at 11 a.m. in St. Alban's Church, Whitney Pier, with Archdeacon Brenda Drake officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment in Eastmount Cemetery at a later date.
