Gloria Thurber

THURBER, Gloria Edith – 89, of Barrington Passage, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 10, 2017. Born on December 18, 1927, in Canning, Gloria was the daughter of the late Ebeneezer and Pearl Dickie. In addition to her parents, Gloria was pre- deceased by her older sister, Helen, and is survived by her brother, Lloyd (Bud) Dickie (Marge); and twin sister, Gwen. Gloria will be dearly missed by her husband of 66 years, Lou Wintford Thurber; daughter, Judy (Don); son, Gary (Lynne); grand-daughters, Beth (Ryan); Katie; Lynsay; Jillian; and great grand-daughter, Adelaide (Beth/Ryan). Gloria was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a generous friend. Gloria graduated from King's County Academy in Kentville, and went on to receive a B.A and B.Ed. from Acadia University and for much of her career was a committed primary school teacher who had a soft spot in her heart for children. Gloria was a very social being who loved to laugh and have fun. She was very appreciative of the many wonderful friendships she and Lou experienced wherever they went. They led a very active life which included bowling, curling, playing bridge, cribbage and other card games. They also travelled extensively while able. Gloria's favourite trip was an African Safari a number of years ago with the splendour of all of the animals. Gloria was an excellent cook, appreciated by her family particularly for her hot milk cakes, chocolate chip cookies and her brown bread. Gloria also loved to knit and for many years, the male members of the family looked forward to homemade socks for Christmas. In later years, Gloria's grand-daughters also reaped the benefits of her talents. Gloria was a dedicated participant in both Lionettes and Red Hats and always thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity for an outing with her friends. Gloria was a twin to Gwen in Ottawa and had that undeniable, special bond that only twins can have. Gloria enjoyed skyping with her sister almost every day. Gloria was grateful to live to meet her first great- grandchild, Adelaide, this past year and delighted in a number of personal visits as well as regular updates through pictures. Cremation took place under the care and direction of H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Barrington. There was a visitation on Saturday, January 14, 7-9pm at the H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. A time of remembrance was held at the H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, on Sunday, January 15, 2pm, with Rev. Brenda McCurdy officiating. A reception at the Lion's Hall followed the memorial service. Family flowers only. In expression of sympathy, donations in Gloria's memory may be made to the IWK Hospital, the Lionettes, and the V.O.N. (Shelburne County Branch).
