JAMES PATRICK (JIM) BATTEN

James Patrick Batten (Jim), 95, was born March 11, 1921 and died Thursday, January 26, 2017. The son of the late Isaac and Catherine (Healy) Batten, Jim was born, raised and resided in New Aberdeen until he went to live in the Veterans Wing at Taigh na Mara in 2006.
A veteran of World War II, Jim served as a tank gunner in the 3rd Armored Reconnaissance, Fifth Division, from May 1941 until May 1946. Upon his discharge, he returned to Glace Bay and joined his father and brothers in the coal mines. In his younger years Jim showed his athletic prowess on the baseball field. Playing alongside his brothers, Ike and Allie, Jim played 1st base and later pitched for the Glace Bay Senior Miners. An outstanding bowler in the Colliery League, Jim won many individual and team awards over the years. Jim had a quick mind and was an astute card player, as a duplicate bridge competitor he enjoyed many victories. Jim was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Church and a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion in New Aberdeen.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Linda Hagell and her husband, Herbert , of Aurora, ON; his grandson, Fredrick and his granddaughter, Kristin Farrell and her husband, Michael and their children, Aiden, Bella and David. Also surviving are his brother, Naish (Elvira) of Glace Bay, Philip (Ruth) of Grande Cache, AB and Tom of Smith Falls, ON; his sisters, Kathleen Yorke of Toronto and Anna Marie (Jimmy) MacDonald of Grande Cache.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife, Henrietta (Babe) Rousell; his brothers, Jack, Joe, Ike, Allie and David and his sisters, Gert, Jenny MacCormack, Emmeline Burns and Sister Cecilia Catherine (Mary Frances).
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Taigh na Mara for their kindness and care given to Jim during his time with them. We also want to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. James MacLean. Visitation will be at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, on Sunday, January 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2017 at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church. Reception to follow.
