Oakley, Arthur Fredrick, 80 of Yarmouth formerly of Port Royal passed away February 14, 2017 in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Yarmouth. Art was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Ann (Reid), his parents Frederick and Leta Oakley and son-in-law Allen Gore (Heather). He is survived by siblings Shirley Barwise (Ralph), Marjorie Cameron (Len), Graham Oakley (Karen); children: Graham Oakley (Susan), Heather Oakley, Laura Barkhouse (Allen); grandchildren: Kendel, Katherine, Amy, Jordan, and Kirk as well as great granddaughters: Lilly and Elizabeth. Arthur served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1953 to 1978, then started a short but illustrious career as a commercial fisherman in Sambro. He also served with the Nova Scotia Provincial Department of Public Health from 1981 to retirement. Dad met his sweetheart, Elizabeth, while on a posting in Germany in 1962 and they were married that same year. Dad and mom built and operated Winchester Farm Cottages in Granville Beach for many years. He proudly completed tours with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Egypt and Cyprus in the 1970’s. Dad was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branches 21 and 61. He had a passion for fishing, hunting, gardening singing and playing music, his family, telling a great joke and life in general. Granddad and Nana deeply loved and were loved by their grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal. A Royal Canadian Legion service followed by a funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 11,2017 in St. George and St. Andrew United Church, Annapolis Royal with Rev. Elisabeth Becham-Jennings officiating. A reception and burial will follow. A Celebration of dad’s life will take place at the Greenville Community Centre in Greenville, Yarmouth Co. on February 21st at 7:00p.m. The celebration will include a selection of Dad’s favorite songs played by local musicians. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Yarmouth Regional Hospital Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.
