Born in Montreal on September 15, 1946, died at dawn on April 4, 2017, with his loving family by his side in St. John's. Predeceased by parents Margaret and Ted Pope, Peter is survived by wife Geneviève Duguay, daughters Laura and Molly Pope (mother Sharon Gray), sister Peggy Pope (Martin Palmer), niece Amanda Barney, nephew Felix Pope (Yui Ito), stepdaughter Clarence Duguay, aunt Ann Dunbar and cousins Jamie, Jennifer and Debbie. Peter led an eclectic life and was a storyteller until the end. A carpenter for many years, he built his home in Flatrock. His eminent career in archeology and historical research led to many awards and accolades. Peter contributed significantly to our understanding of early modern life in Newfoundland and Labrador, and conveyed its importance locally and abroad, notably as director of the Newfoundland Archeological Heritage Outreach Program and member of the Royal Society of Canada. Peter helped establish the LSPU Hall and Resource Centre for the Arts as an important crucible for the arts and artists of the province. He played saxophone in the Battery Big Band and he wrote a play about a moose. In short, a bon vivant. Peter will be remembered for his passion for knowledge, his whacky sense of humour and his earnest love of a good story. Visitations will be held at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Sunday, April 9, 2017 and Monday April 10. 2017 and 10 am, at 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of his life will be held at the Flatrock Community Centre, 495 Windgap Road, on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 7pm onwards. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Dr. Peter Pope Scholarship Fund being established in his memory at Memorial University or to the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, for ocular oncology care and research.
