Cyril Ignatius Costigan

Date de naissance : 31 juillet 1921

Date de décès : 20 avril 2017

Royal Navy/Merchant Marine Veteran. Passed peacefully away on Thursday, April 20 at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion in St. John's, Cyril Ignatius Costigan (95 years) of Harbour Main. Leaving to mourn: his loving wife of 70 years Mary (Hawco); his children Cyril (Helen Tobin), Pat (Carol Ann), Theresa (Larry) Walsh, Marion (Frank) Johnson, Tom (Karen), Viola (Al) Frisky, Roseline (Cary) Ardern, Raymond (Juliette), and Jim; his grandchildren Boyd and John, Aaron and Natalie, Adele and Bobby, Christopher and Frankie, Karrie and Kurt, Jillian and Josh, Samantha and Mike, Bert and Nicholas, and Melissa; his 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces in the Costigan and Hawco family. Our father survived World War II, raising a family of nine children, and prostate cancer, but sadly it was the common flu that took him from us. In 1959 Cyril left Harbour Main to start work with the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Carol Lake (now Labrador City). While there, he was very active with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Sea Cadets. Upon retirement in 1986, he returned to Harbour Main where he continued to be active with the Royal Canadian Legion. He will be remembered as a man with a great sense of humour and dry wit. Most times, it was difficult to tell if he was being serious or just joking around. Our thanks go out to the wonderful staff at the Caribou Veterans Pavilon who looked after him since March 2016. All the staff treated him with kindness, love and respect, as if he was their own father, and for that we are very grateful. Visiting hours will take place at Dunphy's Funeral Home in Holyrood from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. Funeral service will be held at Saint Peter and Paul Church in Harbour Main at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 24. Join us to celebrate his life at the Royal Canadian Legion in Holyrood after that service. Interment/Memorial Service will take place at a later date. Please visit www.dunphys.ca to sign the memorial guest book or to leave a message of condolence.
