Long (Dunford), Dorothy Phyllis, age 90, of Halifax, NS, passed peacefully away 23 April 2017 at Hants Community Hospital with her children by her side.
Born in York, England, she was the daughter of the late Leslie
and Elizabeth Dunford.
Dorothy came to Canada in 1940 as a child evacuee during World War II. At the young age of 16 yrs old, she enrolled in Acadia University later graduating with a B.A. She returned to England after the war and attended Leeds University where she received her B. Ed. She returned to Canada in 1949 and married the late Harold Long.
In the mid 1950’s, she began teaching at the New Glasgow Junior High School retiring in 1988 after 30 years of teaching. She was an excellent and committed teacher. Her love of teaching and learning continued into
retirement as she remained involved in the Association of Science Teachers for more than a decade. Also she contributed significantly to the Science Fair Program for Nova Scotia.
A big animal lover, she volunteered at Bide Awhile Animal Shelter for several years after retirement.
She was a wonderful mother and friend and will be dearly missed.
Surviving her is her daughter, Cheryl Flemming, (Clarence), Prospect, her son, Ritchie Long, (Julia), Calgary, her sister Audrey Irving, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, her brother, Kenneth Dunford, Alicante Spain, her step-grandson, Nicholas Flemming, Toronto, her nieces, Judy McCulloch, Halifax, Marion Dawe, St John’s, Nfld, Leslie Ferguson, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Jacqueline Dickson, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and Janet Hough, Leicester, England.
She was predeceased by her brother, Frank Sumner, Toronto.
