Ethel passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 6, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Cherished mother of Walter, Jimmy (Penny) and Tommy (Tracey), and grandmother to her beautiful granddaughters Rachel and Hannah (Grandma's angels). Survived by her brother Derm, (Betty), Russ (the late Heidi Murray), Pat (Ina), and sister-in-law Helen. Predeceased by her beloved husband Neil, grandson Ben, parents Cyril and Lorraine (nee Lake), sisters Mary, Dorothy and Lorraine and brothers Jim, Gord (Jenny), Cyril (Anne), Tom, Brian, Kevin (Betty), Aubrey (Mary) and Eugene. Ethel will also be missed by a large number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Born and raised in Jerseyside, Ethel was always proud of her Newfoundland roots and never forgot them, even when she was away. After many years in Ottawa and with Neil's passing, it was her love of Newfoundland that brought her home. Ethel endured many hardships during her life but was never one to complain about them. Instead, she confronted them head on with determination, strength (more than she thought she had) and bravery. Before her illness, Ethel loved to socialize, loved to dance and loved music, especially traditional Newfoundland/Irish music. Ethel loved her family and friends dearly and was always open and honest in sharing that love with them. She will be deeply missed and remembered always. Friends and family are invited to Maher's Funeral Home to share stories and memories of Ethel's life. Visitation will be held on May 10 from 7-9 pm, and May 11 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Church, Placentia on May 12 at 11 am, with interment to follow at Dermot McGettigan Memorial Cemetery, Southeast Placentia.
