Hattie Gale

Passed away peacefully at Chancellor Park on Thursday, April 24, 2008, Hattie L. Gale, age 89. Hattie was born at Indian Islands on January 3, 1919. Predeceased by her dear friend and life partner, Margaret Cooze in 2003; her parents: Joseph and Lydia Gale; brothers: Adolphus, Ronald, Horace Gale and Wilson Sheppard; sisters: Lilly Gale, Matilda Roberts, Laura Freake and her special sister Florence Sheppard; brothers-in-law: Baxter Sheppard and Douglas Jewer and niece Eloise Collins. Left to mourn her passing and grateful for having shared her life are her dear sister and best friend, Audrey Jewer of Botwood; nieces: Gail Hancock (Randy), Heather Jewer-Mills (Jack), Ruth McDonald (her caregiver during these last few months) and Betty Goulding (Wayne); nephews: Ronald Gale (Noreen) of South Carolina, Dr. David Jewer (Margaret), Robert Sheppard (Doris), Glenn Sheppard (Marion), David Sheppard (Irene); sister-in-law: Mary Sheppard; and her dear and faithful friend Berkley Reynolds; great-nephews: Andrew Sheppard, Gregory Hancock, Jeremy Hancock, Douglas Jewer and Mark Mills; great-nieces: Dana Sheppard, Leah Jewer, Elyse Jewer, Rachel Mills and Lorie and Debbie Gale of South Carolina; great-great-nephews: Drew Sheppard, Ethan Blackwood and great-great-niece Ava Blackwood; her cousins: Wavey Preston of Ottawa and Armoral Day of Lewisporte; her friends: Betty Duffett, Richard Dyer, Sharon Hynes, and Gerry Allan; her friends and neighbours: Lou and Kay and Clarrie and Naomi Case. During her lengthy career, Hattie worked at Twillingate Hospital in the 1940's as a Nurse's Aide with the esteemed Dr. John Olds. She moved to St. John's in the early 1950's when she worked as a Nanny to the children of the MacGillvray family, later as a dental assistant with Dr. Mallum, she then moved to the DVA dental clinic where she worked with Dr. Greene until her retirement. Her family meant the world to her and she cherished every minute spent with them, especially with the children whom she enjoyed and had fun with always. Flowers are gratefully accepted, but it is her family's preference that donations be made in her memory to the Janeway Foundation. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses of 4 South A, Health Sciences Centre and the nursing staff at Chancellor Park. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, and resting at Gordon Woolfrey Funeral Home, Lewisporte, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Funeral service to be held at St. Matthew's United Church, Lewisporte, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Interment to follow St. Matthew's United Church Cemetery, Lewisporte."A Heart of Gold stopped beating.But Memories will live forever."
