George Frederick Mccaughey

Halifax and Windsor. Born August 6, 1922 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, passed away in Windsor Elms Nursing Home, April 2, 2008, in the presence of his family. George was a devoted member and Past Master of Burn's Lodge #10 AF&AM by whom he was awarded Secretary Emeritus for 30 years of dedicated service. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of 1st Halifax City District, GLNS, a Past Patron of Amethyst Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Philae Shriners and numerous other Masonic Affiliates. George served the RAF Marine division during WW2 and later joined the John Brown Shipyards, Edinburgh, Scotland. Upon Immigrating to Canada he worked for the Halifax Shipyards and later he joined the Montreal firm of Francis Hankin & Sons. He then joined the City of Halifax, where he retired as a Superintendent of Works in 1987. During his retirement George enjoyed his volunteer work with the IWK Children's Hospital and also the Kiwanis Club. He is survived by sons: David (Judy), Halifax, Tom (Shirley), St. John's, N.L.; daughter Marta Robinson, Halifax; brother Vincent (Betty), Belfast, Northern Ireland; grandchildren: Christie (Stephen) Vaillancourt, Hudson, MA, Dennis (Kelsie), Stratford, P.E.I., Bill (Cecile), Saulnierville, N.S., Sean (Andrea Charlwood), Vancouver, B.C.; great-grandchildren: Kailyn and Aiden; step-granddaughter Lisa (David) Theriault; great-grandchildren: Janice and Alaine; numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Charles McCaughey and Martha McMullin; loving wife of 63 years Florence; sister Dora; son-in-law George Robinson. A very special thank you to the staff of 2nd Hart in Windsor Elms, who enjoyed Dad's whistling, and took great care of him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10 in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street. Visitation and Masonic and Eastern Star services will be held at 1:00 p.m. followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow. Family Committal at St. John's Columbarium. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the IWK Children's Hospital, or a charity of one's choice.
