Bertha Jean MacDonald, 87, Bridgewater. Her family is saddened to announce her passing on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 in South Shore Regional Hospital, after an extended period of poor health. Born at Maple Grove, Hants County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Annie (Royles) Marsman. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and was predeceased by sisters Beatrice, Helen, Sarah, Lillian and brothers James, Alex. Bertha is survived by daughter Shirley (Bill) MacLean, Bridgewater; sons Jim (Dorothy), Bedford and Bill, Hubbards, grandchildren Lori Rhodenizer (Don Cook) and Dan (Tina) Mac Lean, Bridgewater; Brad (Jodi) Mac- Lean, Toronto; Andrea (Wade) Temple, Dartmouth; Scott Mac Donald (Kelly Ingraham), Timberlea; Debbie (Chris) Funnell, White Rock B.C.; Rick McKinnon, Princeport; 13 great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild and several nieces. She spent her early years at Clifton, Colchester County, before moving to Truro and later into her own home in Bible Hill. Bertha worked for 27 years at NS Youth Training Center, initially as a counsellor and later as an administrator. She was an active member of St. George’s Anglican Church, Bible Hill and its ACW for many years before moving to Bridgewater in 2001 to be closer to family. We would like to thank Dr. Ferguson, and the nurses of the third floor at SSRH for their compassionate care. Special thank you to Mum’s care workers Shirley, Judy, Theresa and Toni who became friends and part of our family over the past few years. Cremation has taken place, with a family interment of ashes at Christ Church, Clifton. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with funeral at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, The Reverend Laurie Omstead officiating, followed by a reception, all at Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home 55 Young St., Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Canada. Family and friends are invited to sign the guest book at www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
