Burrell Roy Downing, SSM CD1 - age 72 – Economy, NS. At the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, Burrell went to be with his Lord, and special English Springer Spaniel “Flirt” after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Spryfield, N.S., Sept. 24, 1935, he was a son of the late Roy and Margaret (Dymond) Downing. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth (Taylor); daughter Nancy of Economy; son Jonathan of Edmonton; granddaughter Christine Downing and fiancé (Adrian Pollen) of Ottawa; brother Laurie (Virginia) Downing of Economy; sister Alicia Downing (Lloyd Maier) of Calgary; 12 nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his friend and mentor Eddie Roberts. Burrell joined the army where he was a paratrooper with the RCR. Later he joined the RCAF as an airframe technician and later a non-destructive testing technician. He spent a total of 32 years with the Canadian military, retiring to Economy in 1985 to build his house. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, leather work and fly tying. He was a square dancer caller for the former Mayflower Dancers which he especially enjoyed. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Economy Fire Brigade and spent many hours helping with the new addition to the Economy Recreation Centre and Economy Clam Festival. He was a member of the Economy United Church where he held the positions of trustee, steward, choir member, former elder and past clerk of session (10 years). Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and where the Royal Canadian Legion, Cobequid Branch No. 72, Great Village, will conduct a legion tribute service at 3:30 p.m. and where a memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008 at 2 p.m., all in the Economy United Church, Economy. Rev. Florence Antle-Brison will officiate with a reception to follow in the Economy Recreational Centre. Spring interment will take place in the Economy Cemetery, Economy. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall Funeral Home, Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Economy United Church or to a charity of choice.
