POULTER - Alfred Arthur (Alf) was born on August 4, 1922, the only child of Arthur and Grace (Chandler) Poulter at McLean, SK. Arthur and Grace had immigrated to Canada from England. In 1927, the Poulter family moved from McLean to Balgonie, SK, where Alf took his schooling at Petersburg School. Alf joined the Canadian Army in 1941,at the age of 19, serving with the Regina Rifle Regiment, and later the Calgary Highlanders. While with the Regina Rifles, Alf was stationed in Suffield, AB, and took part in a poisonous gas experiment that was being conducted there. As a result of this exposure, Alf suffered health and lung problems in later years. In 1942, Alf went overseas to England, with the Calgary Highlanders. There he was injured during active duty, when a land mine exploded on May 5, 1943. Alf\'s injuries included shrapnel injuries and a broken leg, which resulted in a seven month hospital stay. Alf returned to Canada on the Canadian Hospital Ship, the Lady Nelson, and was taken by train to Regina. He remained on crutches until the fall of 1944. In December 1945, the Poulter family bought a mixed farm with help from the DVA , located North of Regina. As well as farming Alf worked as a repairman for several rural phone companies. In 1948, Mrs. Grace Poulter provided room and board to the local school teacher, Miss Anne McLeod, from Pambrun, SK, On December 24, 1964, Miss McLeod married Alf and came to live permanently on the farm. The death of his father coupled with Alf\'s increasing health problems, caused Alf and Anne to sell the family farm in 1972, and move to Maple Creek, SK. They lived there for ten years while Alf worked for Hodson\'s Hardware. In 1982, they moved to Regina to reside in Oxford Manor, a residence for retired teachers. In 1995, they made their final move to Swift Current where Anne passed away in August 1997. Alf moved to The Bentley in February 2007, enjoying the company there until June 2008, when he fell and broke his hip. He became a resident of Cypress Lodge in Maple Creek until his passing on January 20, 2009. Alf was actively involved in the local Salvation Army giving generously of his time and energy by volunteering. He also served as a Council Member of the Church Board. Alf was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #75 in Maple Creek, the local Genealogy Association, the local Model Train club and the Archaeology Club. Alf\'s hobbies included collecting model trains and reading. One of Alf\'s greatest joys was socializing, discussing politics, highway construction, farming, water shed activities in our area and other conservations topics. Alf was a very learned individual and was always willing to discuss any subject brought up. He was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed keeping up on current events by reading his newspaper and magazines. He also loved to travel the countryside and greatly enjoyed his trips to the Martin Ranch in the Maple Creek area. Alf was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Grace Poulter and his loving wife Anne. A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. from the Salvation Army Citidel, with Capt. Paul Loner officiating. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion formed an Honor Guard and the Legion Last Rites were observed. A service of interment will take place at the family grave side in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Swift Current, SK, at a later date. Memorial donations in Alf\'s memory to the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family. Warren\'s Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
