ST. PAULS – Christopher Jacot “Kit” Hodgson-Robinson, 84, of St. Pauls, Pictou County, passed away with dignity and grace at Valley View Villa, Riverton on March 27, 2007. Born in Derby, England on September 16, 1922, he enjoyed a happy family life in the nearby village of Castle Donington. At the onset of World War 11, Kit joined the Royal Navy. He served mainly on Mine-Sweepers and Cruisers, ending his naval career as a Lieutenant. In 1946, he moved to Scotland and there pursued his life-long passion and appreciation for the land and all living things as a shepherd. Kit and his family immigrated to Newfoundland in December of 1954 as he had been recruited by Joey Smallwood to establish and oversee the Sheep Division of Russwood Ranch on Roaches Line, NL. In 1960, Kit made a trip to Nova Scotia where he discovered beautiful Pictou County. That summer, the family moved to the East River Valley. Kit was employed at Eastern Meat Packers and Canso Chemicals while continuing with his love for farming, raising sheep, judging sheep-dog trials and many other aspects of the sheep industry. He was an elder in the St. Pauls Presbyterian Church, St. Pauls, a past president and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #75, Eureka. Kit is survived by three children, Chris (Patricia), Plymouth, Pictou County; Abigail (Bruce) Smith, Edmonton, Alberta; and Mark (Carmen), Whitehorse, YT; six grandchildren, Kelly Robinson, Halifax; Lisa Pauls, Haines Junction, YT; Jonas Smith, Whitehorse, YT; Gitane De Silva, Ottawa, ON; Chad Smith, Vancouver; BC; Hannah Smith, Edmonton, AB; 2 step-grandchildren, Graham McCleen, Summerland BC; and Ryan McCleen, Penticton, BC; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Dawn and Lois and a brother Tony, all residing in England. Kit was predeceased by two sisters, Diane and Judith, both of England and by his former wife, Gypsy. We will miss his gift of storytelling and the wonderful twinkle of mischief in his eye. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation at the request of the deceased. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Kit may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #75, Eureka or to the Valley View Villa Bus Fund.
