WESTVILLE – Dorothy “Dot” Viola (Sponagle) Whittier, 84, Drummond Road, Westville, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Goldboro, Guysborough Co., she was a daughter of the late Parker and Lillian (MacArthur) Giffin. Dorothy’s most precious possession was her family. She spent her life raising and caring for her children and extended family. In her younger years, she worked for a short time at Ferguson’s Drug Store, Pictou. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; daughters, Sheila Allan (Greg), Truro; Dawn Watters (Bill), Westville; sons, Barry Sponagle (Diane), Westville; Glenn Sponagle (Susan), Stellarton; special niece, Donalda Davidson, Antigonish; step-daughters, Joan Cheeseman (Pat), Nfld.; Judy Garland (Paul), Westville; step-son, Bob Whittier, Shad Bay; sisters, Rita Giffin, Goldboro; Irene Tremblett (Ed), New Glasgow; brothers: Aubrey Giffin (Faye), Wentworth; Oland “Ollie” Giffin (Nina), Goldboro; Bob Giffin (Laureen), Halifax, Wayne Giffin (Shelley), Sherbrooke; grandchildren: Heather Fraser and Brian Allan; Jeff and Mitchell Watters; Shannon Sponagle-Jarvis, Shane Sponagle, Michelle Angst, and Christopher Sponagle; Holly and Matthew Sponagle; Mark and Debbie Cheeseman, Dianne Trickett; Melissa and Joey Forsythe and Jason Garland; Robbie and Ryan Whittier; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Earle Sponagle; and step-son-in-law, Joe Forsythe Cremation has taken place. Visitations will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m Wednesday at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
