NEW GLASGOW – Dr Thomas Scott MacDonald, 85, passed away peacefully at Willow Lodge in Tatamagouche, on December 21, 2007, after a lengthy illness. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret “Polly” (Casey) MacDonald. He lived in Scotland for the first six months of his life, before moving back to his beloved Ireland and growing up first in Limerick and later, in Dublin. He studied medicine at the University College Dublin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine. He moved to England and continued his studies at Hammersmith graduating as an Obstetrician / Gynecologist. He practised in London, England, in the early days before immigrating to Canada in 1964. First moving to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and then in 1969 to New Glasgow. T.S. as he was known, worked as a physician in New Glasgow from 1969 to 1983. After closing his private practice, he was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, until retiring in 1992. An accomplished artist, he spent many hours lovingly creating his illuminated manuscripts and pen and ink illustrations. One of these manuscripts was presented to Pope John Paul II on his visit to Nova Scotia in 1984. He loved books, was an avid reader, and lover of opera. He was also a longtime member of the New Glasgow Rotary Club, and of Our Lady of Lourdes, Roman Catholic Church. He will be sadly missed by his children: Tara (Paul) Sutton, ON, Dr. James (Sandra) London ON, Justin, Bedford, NS, Stacey (Alex) Fredericton, NB, Emma (Bill) Trenton NS, Sarah, Brampton ON, Kate St. Stephen NB, Harriet (David) Shelburne NS, John (Heidi) Beamsville ON, and his seven grandchildren: Ian, Alexandra, Nicholas, Krystal, Robyn, Riley, and Robert. He is survived by his brother, Donald, Dublin, Ireland, and his sisters, Margaret (Stan) Glen Rock New Jersey, and Maryanne, Dublin, Ireland. He was predeceased by his wife, Angela Isabel. The family wishes to extend their many thanks to the Staff at Willow Lodge in Tatamagoughe for their excellent care and compassion. We would also like to extend our gratitude and thanks to Arlene Spears, in whose house he lived and who looked after him caringly with compassion and love for over 10 years. Thanks to Arlene’s daughter Sierra, and her Mother (Kay) and Father (Carl) for all their support over the years. T.S. truly thought of Arlene as another daughter. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 27, from 7 to 9 and Friday, December 28, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Donations in his Memory may be made to The Aberdeen Hospital Foundation, or the New Glasgow Public Library.
