HOPEWELL – George Allan Currie, 93, Hopewell, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 30, 2008, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born, June 24, 1914, in Ruperts Land, Man., he was a son of the late George and Winifred Rutherford (MacCombe) Currie. He began working as a farmer in Manitoba at an early age and was then employed with a Pulp and Paper Company in Ontario before joining the Army in 1941. During the Second World War, he served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (1941-1946), obtaining the rank of Corporal. Upon discharge, he returned to Nipawin, Sask., where he worked at Ford Mercury Motors for five years. He worked in Northern Alberta for several years before moving to Hopewell in 1959. He had been employed with Proudfoot Motors, Clairtone, Pictou County Bus Service, while concurrently working as a self-employed mechanic. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hopewell and had served on the Board of Managers for 10 years. He served for many years on the Board of the Hopewell Cemetery Company. He was a 60-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 137, Hopewell. He was a founding member of the Hopewell Heritage Foot Bridge and Ceilidh, and was very active in community affairs. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Annie S. “Babs” (MacPherson); daughter, Winifred (William) Cameron, Trafalgar; son, John, Hopewell; brother, Amos, Sask.; four granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Georgina in infancy, Helen and Hazel; brothers, James, Errol and Hardy; daughter-in-law, Karen. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2008 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Gary Tonks officiating. Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery. Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Family flowers only.
