Honourable Justice Alexander ("Dooley") Macintosh
Date de décès : 2 décembre 2007
The Honourable Justice Alexander M. (“Dooley”) MacIntosh, late of Quarry Island, Pictou County, NS, and formerly of Halifax, who departed this life December 2nd, 2007 on the threshold of his 91st year. Born in Sydney, NS, he first showed leadership in athletics, gaining prowess with a hockey stick on what is now the Sydney Tar Ponds. He went on to lead his Sydney Academy football team to Provincial Championships. He attained his undergraduate degree at Mount Allison University, where he again led both the football and hockey teams to Maritime championships. He graduated from Mt. A as Class Valedictorian and simultaneously achieved the peak of his life’s success: capturing the heart of his bride of 61 years, the late Kathryn (Fraser) MacIntosh. Dooley next attended Dalhousie Law School, where again he found time to play for championship teams in both hockey and football. He interrupted his legal studies to enlist in the Canadian Army, where he was responsible for artillery training in Gander, NF. At the end of WWII, he returned to Dalhousie Law School and was admitted to the NS Bar in 1947. He was a sole practitioner in New Glasgow until 1965, when he joined with the late Hon. Justice HJ MacDonnell and the late Hon. Justice RB MacDonald to form the law partnership of MacIntosh, MacDonnell & MacDonald, today known as Mac, Mac & Mac. After 26 years as a practicing lawyer, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of NS in 1973. Justice MacIntosh went on to become one of the most senior jurists on the Bench, establishing a particular reputation for mastering the nuances of criminal law. Justice MacIntosh presided over the last trial at the old Pictou Court House. He elected supernumerary status in 1987, eventually retiring fully in 1991, after 44 years of service to the Bench and Bar. Following judicial retirement he served as Conflict of Interest Commissioner for the Province of Nova Scotia. He also served as a Pension Appeals Board judge, presiding on appeals across Canada’s ten provinces and territories, while in his eighties. Despite other recognition, his proudest public service was as Mayor of the Town of New Glasgow from 1961 – 1970, during a period of bustling urban renewal. He was a proud native Cape Bretoner, but even more proud of his adopted Pictou County, whose citizens returned to him in his later years the community service that he had earlier given to them. His much anticipated trips to the local coffee shop, cornerstore and his favoured grocery chain provided him daily small town exposure to friendly faces and caring Pictonians who much enriched his last few years, when aging had begun to take its toll. He was a former Sunday School Superintendent and adherent of Trinity United Church, where he acquired late in life the gift of lusty hymnal singing. He was a past President of Branch 34 Royal Canadian Legion, the New Glasgow Rotary Club, and served a variety of other community organizations. Justice MacIntosh was predeceased in 2002 by his beacon of 61 years, Kathryn. Kay and Dooley are survived by eight appreciative sons and daughters-in-law: Ian and Gillian of Sydney, Australia; Sandy and Shirley of Halifax; Bruce and Sue of Quarry Island; and Lachie and Debi of Dartmouth; as well as by 12 admiring grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. AMM was a modest man of integrity who was given the gift of a life fully lived. In lieu of flowers, he would welcome silent acts of generosity to a deserving person, cause or idea. Visitation will be at H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, December 5th, 2007, followed by Service at Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, Thursday, December 6th at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jim Webber- Cook officiating.
