PICTOU - J. Renette MacKelvie, M.C.S.P. - Loyal and loving wife, dear and fun-loving mother, and a great and generous friend - died on February 21, 2007, in Pictou, N.S. Born in 1923 in London, England, she was the second of four children of the late Rev. Canon Ellis Edge-Partington and the late Muriel (Seymour) Edge-Partington. She received her education at Winchester Girls College. In 1941 she joined the W.R.N.S. where she served as a motorcycle dispatch rider carrying documents between the Navy H.Q. in Portsmouth and the Admiralty in London, often under enemy attack. She frequently acted as solo motorcycle outrider to service dignitaries visiting Portsmouth including General Mark Clarke. Following hospitalization after a road accident, she was promoted to Third Officer W.R.N.S. and worked in various cipher and coder positions. After the war, she trained as a physiotherapist at Kings College Hospital in London, and worked in a number of hospitals before joining a medical rehabilitation team in Greece treating the wounded resulting from the civil war. In 1953 she emigrated to Canada where she worked for the Canadian Arthritis Society, first in Chilliwack, B.C. and later in Nanaimo where she met her future husband. In Vancouver, after her marriage, she worked part-time at the Vancouver General Hospital and was the designated physio to the "Thunderbirds", the UBC football team. In 1965, the family moved to Nova Scotia where for many years she was a voluntary worker in the Halifax branch of the M.S. Society and later was an active member of the Palliative Care group attached to the Sutherland-Harris Memorial Hospital in Pictou. She is survived by Robin, her husband of 51 years, a daughter, Gillian (Doug) in Ottawa, a son, James (Ann) in Pictou, five grandchildren: Andrew, Paula, Alastair, Erin and Connor. Also surviving are a sister, Catherine, and brother, Patrick, in England, and a brother John, in Creston, B.C. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation at Renette's request. A funeral service will be held in the McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou on Saturday, February 24, 2007, at 11 a.m. A reception for family and friends will follow at the Anglican Church Hall, Pictou. Family flowers only please. Interment will be in the Seaview Cemetery, in the summer of 2007. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all staff members of the Shiretown Nursing Home for their concern for, and tender care of, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.
