Melville William Coppell

New Glasgow/Halifax - Melville William Coppell, 88 of Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, and formerly of Halifax, passed away on Wednesday, July 25th, 2007, in the manor. Born in Melville Cove, NS, he was a son of the late Frederick and Alice (Panton) Coppell. Melville was a resident of Pictou County since 1978. He was an adherent of St. James Anglican Church in Pictou. Melville served overseas and joined the Manchester Regiment and then transferred to the Canadian Army, the Toronto Scottish Regiment. He received a commendation for bravery. Later he was wounded and sent home. He worked in property management at the time of his retirement. Melville was deeply involved for many years with St. Augustine's Church in Jollimore (Halifax). He was an active member in the Vimy Branch R.C.L., Halifax, where he served several terms as president and was choir director. He also started the legion choir for Branch #34 Normandy Branch, New Glasgow. Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn Serrick; sisters, Eileen Gilhen, Kingston, NS; Doreen (Jack) Moss, Gloucester, ON; several nieces and nephews and family friend, Carol Baudoux, New Glasgow. He was predeceased by brothers, James and Frederick. Family flowers only please. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow, with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Burial will be in the Gladstone Cemetery, Four Mile Brook. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
