It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Garland F. (Gar) MacQuarrie, 93, at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Gar was born in Sydney on June 29, 1923 to Archibald MacQuarrie and Clara (Powell).
In his early years , Gar played rugby for Sydney Academy, enjoyed hunting, sailing, harness racing and was a member of the Y’s Mens Club of Sydney, his investment club, mixed bridge club, supper club, and the Social Club at St .George’s Parish where he looked after the bar. Numerous hours were spent flooding the yard to make a skating rink for Scott and the kids in the North End and for his grandsons, Curt and Lee. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Gerald and Wesley and sister, Gerry; brothers-in-law, Bill Lewis, Frank Reilly, Jack Cunningham, Ian MacDermid and sister-in-law, Thelma Cunningham. Gar is survived by his beautiful wife, Lorna (Lewis), of 65 years and son, Scott (Cindy O’Handley, children, Jessica and David Pike). His pride and joy were his grandsons, Curt (Alison Gregory) and their new daughter, Harper, Nuneaton, England and Lee (Jessica Milinkovic), Steinbach Manitoba and their mother, Shelly Fedora; sister-in-law, Eva Lampman, Gwen MacDermid, Eleanor Lewis and brother-in-law, Kevin MacAskill and his wife, Gail; many nieces and nephews and great friends and neighbors.
