STELLARTON - Major (Ret'd) Bernard William Joseph Gerrior, 78, of Cambey Ave., Stellarton, passed away Tuesday, May 15th, 2007, at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Stellarton, he was a son of the late Joseph and Eleanor (Guthro) Gerrior. Bernard was involved with the Air Cadets since the age of 12. In 1944 he helped form the 374 Stellarton Air Cadet Squadron and in 1970 became C.O. of the Squadron and was promoted to Major. In 1954 he was commissioned as a pilot officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In his early years he was employed by the C.N.R., later working as a distributor for Gulf Oil, Stellarton and retiring from Hawker Siddeley. Currently Bernard was Liaison Officer of 374 Stellarton and 397 Trenton Air Cadet Squadrons. He was a member of the R.C.A.F. #110 Northumberland Wing, Stellarton for 53 years and served as a current director of the wing. He was also past Sergeant At Arms of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #28, Stellarton. In 1998 and 2003 he received from the Town of Stellarton a Provincial Volunteer Award and Certificate of Appreciation. Surviving are daughters, Katherine (Louis) White, Stellarton and Mary (Bill Jr.) Long Jr., Westville; grandchildren: Amber Richards, Edmonton; Vanessa and Brianna Long, both of Westville; great-grandson, Joey Richards, Edmonton; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, the former Joyce Anita MacDonald; brothers, Edward and Leo. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Our Lady Of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Francis Cameron and Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in MacLennan's Mountain Cemetery. Donations in memory of Bernard may be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Society or to a charity of one's choice.
