FERGUSON, GEORGE GORDON CM, M.B., B.Ch, FRCS LLD The death of George Gordon. Ferguson of Fredericton, NB, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Thursday, September 2nd, 2004. Born in Bandon, Ireland, on June 2, 1918 he was the son of the late George Joseph and Annie Kathleen (Burns) Ferguson and the husband of Norma (Clarke) Ferguson. Gordon obtained degrees in Medicine and Surgery from the National University of Ireland, and did studies at Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Second World War, also he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1949. As well, he practiced Surgery and Urology at the Guy's Hospital and St. Peter's Hospital in the United Kingdom. Gordon came to Canada in 1954, and practiced surgery in Sackville, NB. While in Sackville, he was a chairman of the school board and active in the Anglican Church. In 1971, Gordon moved to Fredericton to become Medical Director of Medicare, and in 1980 he founded the New Brunswick Extra Mural Hospital. He was awarded an Honorary LLD from the University of New Brunswick in 1991, and made a member of the Order of Canada in 2001. The Order of Canada citation read, in part: "He is recognized for his groundbreaking work in home-care. He spearheaded the efforts that led to the creation of the New Brunswick Extra- Mural Hospital, a program to treat elderly people and chronically ill people in their homes. This initiative revolutionized the delivery of long - term care. He headed this organization for more than 15 years and was a leader in the development and implementation of a team - based approach to patient services in his province". Gordon was a parishioner of the St. Peter's Anglican Church and Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton. He was a noted local watercolorist and active in the Fredericton Society of Artists. Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Norma (Clarke) Ferguson; three sons, Brian (Manuella) of Guelph, ON, Michael (Georgina) of Fredericton, NB and Martin (Sarah) of Fredericton, NB; four grandchildren, Ashley, Craig, Malcolm and Geoffrey; and one brother, Rob of Cork, Ireland; one sister, Elma Turner of Cork, predeceased him. There will be no visitation by family request. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, September 11th, 2004. at 2:00 pm. The Very Rev. Keith Joyce will officiate. A private interment will be in the Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes can be made to the Christ Church Cathedral Restoration Fund or the Dr. Everett Chalmers Palliative Care Unit.
