- Barry, FRCSC, FACS, MD. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Barry with his family and close friends at his side on July 25, 2008, at RUH. He has left our side to join his greatest love and soul mate, Iris, who predeceased him in 2002. He leaves to mourn his passing and to celebrate his legacy, son Trevor (Kimberly) of Saskatoon, SK, daughter Andrea (Tim, grandchildren Evan and Lara) Wuetherick of Sherwood Park, AB, along with countless friends and colleagues. Also his extended family consisting of sisters-in-law Ann Ogenchuk, Jane Nemish, Mary (Steve) Matwychuk, brothers-in-law Bill (Thelma) Lewchuk, Harry (Natalie) Lewchuk, John (Stella) Lewchuk and numerous nieces and nephews that all held a special place in his heart. Barry was also predeceased by mother Joanne and father Roy, and brothers-in-law Chester, Mike and John. Barry was born May 25, 1944 in Yorkton, SK. He obtained his B.A. (1966) and M.D. (1970) degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. Barry and Iris were married on July 24, 1971, and moved to Moose Jaw, SK where he served for the Canadian Armed Forces as a Medical Officer and Base Surgeon. One of the highlights of his military career was obtaining his pilot's licence. He then left this post to further his medical career, specializing in ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery. Upon completing his residency in Saskatoon (1974-76) and Toronto (1976-78), he returned to Saskatoon where he entered into private medical practice until 1998, including four years (1994-1998) as a Principal Medical Consultant with Saskatchewan Health. Upon leaving his medical practice, he assumed the position of Vice-President, Medical Services with the Saskatoon Health Region until 2006. Since 1978, he was also a Clinical Associate Professor with the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. Ever the lifelong learner, Barry was near completion of a master's degree in conflict analysis and management from Royal Roads University. At the time of his passing, Barry was also a partner with QuestCan HR/Leadership Consultants Inc. In addition to the publication of several papers and articles and delivery of numerous presentations and lectures to audiences across the country, Barry was involved with a wide number of local, provincial and national organizations: Past President and active member of both the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the College of Physician and Surgeons of Saskatchewan; former board member of the Canadian Medical Association; Vice-Chair of the Health Services Utilisation and Research Commission; Fellow of the American College of Medical Quality and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; Active member of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Physician Executives, the Canadian Society of Physician Executives, and the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. Barry will be deeply missed by all for his enduring smile, his boisterous laugh and humorous mischievousness, his genuine compassion and his unconditional love and generosity. Most of all, he will be missed for the special touch he brought to everyone and everything, always leaving each person and the moment at hand better than he found it. His lifelong and foremost priority toward people and relationships was evident in his beaming pride and joy over his own children, grandchildren, and his constant and loyal companions, golden retrievers Chui and Dala. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the extensive team of health care professionals who offered valiant and tireless effort and care to Barry, including Drs. Pearce, Stein, Thompson, Shaw, Kappel, Bree, Boyle, Kelly, Pylypchuk, along with the amazing staff from RUH ER, ICU, CCU and Unit 6000. Our father held compassion, competency and quality in high regard, and you are all shining examples of these same principles. The Vigil of Prayers for Barry will be held on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 31st, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Both services will be held at the Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon, Sk S7J 3V7) celebrated by Rev. Fr. Ken Beck and Rev. Fr. Len Cyr. Rite of Committal will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. A man of endless quotes, stories and wisdom, a favourite of Barry's quotes perhaps sums up his philosophy of life most eloquently: "No love, no friendship, can cross the path of our destiny without leaving some mark on it forever" (Francois Mauriac). We are all marked and deeply touched as better human beings for having Barry in our lives for the fortunate time we did. Rest in peace dearest Dad until we meet again.
