MAXINE MAE (WILLIAMS) HUGHSON

HUGHSON, MAXINE MAE (WILLIAMS) Maxine (Williams) Hughson, Westford Nursing Home, Port Elgin NB, (formerly of Fredericton), daughter of John Wallace and Annie Brae (Edwards) Williams, died at The Westford Nursing Home, April 27th, 2009 in her 100th year. She was a long-time member of St Paul's United Church and was a well-known Maritime artist having studied under Lewis Smith R.C.A. graduating from Acadia University, Fine Arts 1928. She also studied voice and piano at Acadia and took extension courses at the University of New Brunswick with Lucy Jarvis, Fritz Brantner, Alfred Pinsky, Molly Lamb Bobak, Don Reichert, Pegi Nichol MacLeod, Sinclair Healy, Nick Deleu and Marjorie Donaldson. In her youth she was a Girl Guide leader and was active in many sports including swimming, diving, canoeing, ice hockey and curling, having continued with swimming throughout her life. She was a soloist in several Maritime church choirs and was a faithful member of St. Paul's Choir for many years. She was a committee member of the Fredericton Music Festival and the Fredericton Civic Orchestra. Maxine was a past president of the Fredericton Art Club as well as an organizer and the first President of the Fredericton Society of Artists. She taught school music in Petitcodiac in the 30's, adult classes in oil painting in Moncton in the 40's and watercolour technique for several years in Fredericton during the 50's and 60's. The family lived in many locations in the Maritimes while following her husband's profession of highway and airport engineering. Retirement years included trailering around the continent, later spending the winters in Key Largo, Florida. Maxine is survived by one son, Janus A (Jim) Hughson (Lorna) of Fredericton, two daughters, Brenda Trafford (Tom) of Murray Corner, NB and Heather Schwarzkopf of Toronto, ON, eight grandchildren (Michael, Susan, Jeffrey, Tamra, Terrilee, Heidi, Kirsten and Christof), thirteen great grandchildren (Ky, Kate, Max, Emma, Chrissy, Shelby, Braedon, Sasha, Thomas, Heather, Elyse, Sophie, and Maya), as well as several special nephews and nieces. Predeceased by her husband, Horace G. Hughson (1987), brothers, John A (Jack) Williams and Donald E. Williams, her sister, M. Elizabeth (Betty) Chapman of Moncton (July 2008) and infant granddaughter, Catherine (1956). No Visitation by request, Memorial service will be held at the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 1st, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Rev. H.G. MacKenzie officiating, Interment will take place in the Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations to St. Paul's United Church Choir Music Fund, The Fredericton Music Festival, New Brunswick Chorale Federation or to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
