ALEXANDER, MADELINE AMELIA 1917-2009 The death of Madeline Amelia (Chapman) Alexander occurred with the grace, dignity and generosity that distinguished her life at the Oromocto Public Hospital on Sunday, November 1st. Madeline is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ivan Alexander; her son, Dana and his wife, Carol, Fredericton, NB; her daughter, Patricia and her husband, Eric Bachen, Langley, BC; her daughter, Susanne and her spouse, Gary Stairs, Fredericton, NB; three much-loved grandchildren, Shellie Andrews, Lisa Alexander, and Aaron Alexander-Stairs, all of Fredericton, NB; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Waldo and Ida Jane (Harding) Chapman; sisters, Marion and Audrey; and brothers, Atlee and Norman. Born in Tidnish, Nova Scotia, on March 3rd, 1917, Madeline grew up in Tidnish and neighbouring Amherst. She began her career at F.W.Woolworth where, at the beginning of World War II, she met the man of her dreams, marrying him on July 21st, 1943. She then packed her bags and followed Ivan to Yarmouth and Charlottetown, and later to Rusagonis Station, where she immersed herself in her family and her community. She became a devoted mother and grandmother, generous hostess, community organizer, and partner with Ivan in the family business, I.B. Alexander, General Merchant. Opening her home and her kitchen to neighbours, friends and family, she was known far and wide for her generosity, her kind words and keen intellect, and her unrivalled recipe for molasses cookies. Madeline was an active, long-time member of numerous organizations, including the Rusagonis Station Chapter of the New Brunswick Women's Institute, the Rusagonis Baptist Church, and the Women's Missionary Society. Visitation will be held at the Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago Street, Oromocto, NB, on Monday, November 2nd, from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday, November 3rd, from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Madeline's funeral will be held at the Rusagonis Baptist Church, 4 Whittaker Road, on Wednesday, November 4th, at 2 pm. Rev. Brent MacDonald and Rev. Bob Johnson will officiate. Internment will take place at the Rusagonis Station Cemetery immediately following the service. For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to the Rusagonis Baptist Church, Compassion Canada, or the Huntington Society of Canada in lieu of flowers.
