MOONEY, JOHN P. - The death of John P. Mooney P. Eng. of 36 Coburg St., husband of Rosamond I. (Alexander) Mooney, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, March 29, 2003. Mr. Mooney was born in Saint John, a son of the late John P. and Evelyn M. (Lawlor) Mooney. He was educated at St. John the Baptist School and St. Vincent's Boys' High School before receiving his Diploma of Engineering from St. Francis Xavier University and his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. From 1955 to 1958 he was an Equipment Engineer with N.B. Tel and from 1958 to 1960 he was Senior Engineer with D. Roland Webb, P. Eng. & Associates, Consulting Engineers, in Saint John. From 1960 to the present he operated John P. Mooney, P. Eng. & Associates, Consulting Engineers. He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of New Brunswick and was licensed to practice by the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada; the Consulting Engineers of New Brunswick; the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers; the Illuminating Engineering Society; the National Fire Protection Association; and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He had been a member of the Saint John Executive Association; the Union Club; 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus; Opera New Brunswick; and the Saint John Exhibition Association. He had served as Registrar of the Association of Professional Engineers of New Brunswick for 15 years; Treasurer and Vice-President CChildren's Aid Society; President of St. John the Baptist Credit Union; Chairman of the Saint John Branch, Engineering Institute of Canada; Chairman of the Maritime Section, Illuminating Engineering Society; President of Saint John Industrial Parks Ltd.; Member and Vice-Chairman of the Saint John Port and Industrial Development Commission; a Member of the Saint John-Fundy Regional Development Commission; President of St. Patrick's Society; a Founding Director of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Peace & Development; Honorary Chairman of St. Patrick's Week Irish Canadian Cultural Association in 1992; and a Director of Festival By the Sea. John was a faithful supporter of the Saint John Boys and Girls Club. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick for the constituency of Saint John South from 1974-78 and from 1987-91. He was Opposition Energy Critic from 1974-1978 and Financial Critic in 1978. He had served on the following Legislative Committees: Public Accounts; Municipalities; Law Amendments; Corporations; Energy; Economic Policy Development; Board of Management and Crown Corporations. He was a former President of the Saint John Young Liberal Association; former President of the Saint John Federal Liberal Association; former Executive Committee Member of the N.B. Liberal Association; and Co-chairman of the Saint John Federal Constituency Election Campaign Committee in the 1968 federal election. He was a candidate for the Leadership of the New Brunswick Liberal Party in 1978. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Alexander R. White (Deborah) of Calgary, and William G. White (Echo Antworth) of Halifax; one daughter, Mrs. Holly LeMesurier (James) of Saint John; one brother, Patrick J. Mooney of Saint John; six sisters, Mrs. Kathleen MacDougall of Saint John, Mrs. Constance Marr of Rothesay, Miss Geraldine Mooney of Fredericton Jct., Mrs. Barbara Moore (Raymond) of Ottawa, Mrs. Evelyn Morris (Denis) of Halifax, and Miss Gertrude Mooney of Saint John; five grandchildren, Christa, Andrew, and Colin White, and Anne and Ross LeMesurier; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday morning at 10:30 to St. John the Baptist Church for Mass of Christian Burial at eleven o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visiting on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
