JAMES PATAKI

PATAKI, JAMES - The death of James Pataki of Fredericton, NB occurred on January 27th, 2004 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Hungary in 1925, James grew up and was educated in Toronto. His musical talents were recognized early, winning numerous awards including being presented the key to the City by the Mayor of Toronto at the tender age of 11. He studied at the Toronto Conservatory and was a select student of renowned violinist Kathleen Parlow. He received his diploma (viola) at the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. He toured extensively in North America, Europe and Asia as a soloist, chamber musician and with major symphony orchestras. It was during his tenure with the Philharmonia Hungarica in Germany, that he met his wife Inge. It was love at first sight. In 1969, he was invited to form the Brunswick String Quartet at the University of New Brunswick with former Toronto colleagues in Fredericton, NB. As a lifelong collector of fine art, he founded Gallery 78 with Inge in 1976. His creative life also included designing and building a summer camp made exclusively of bottles. This unusual building has been featured in various media including television and film. He passed away peacefully on January 27 with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife Inge (born Dombrowe), a sister Alice (Dr. Csongor Janosné) in Budapest , daughter Germaine Pataki-Thériault (Lévis), his son Dennis Pataki (Nathalie), daughter Gisèle Petrie (Jamie) and seven beautiful granddaughters who will miss their Opa very much: Véronique, Anna, Émilie, Allissa, Naomi, Sophie and Celina. Donations may be made to the University of New Brunswick - James Pataki Memorial Prize, established in memory of James and in appreciation of UNB for its support of the Brunswick String Quartet. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2004 from 2 - 4 pm at Gallery 78, 796 Queen St. Fredericton, NB. McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements. www.mcadamsfh.com
