DECOSTA W. YOUNG

YOUNG, DECOSTA W. - Peacefully, at the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB on December 16, 2005, Mr. W. Decosta Young, husband of Pauline Rachel (Johnson) Young of Leonardville, Deer Island, NB. Born in Deer Island on April 11, 1919, he was a son of the late Warren and Mamie (Conley) Young. A loving husband, father and brother, he is survived, besides his wife, by one son, Brooke Young of Deer Island; one daughter, Roxanne (Adrian) Smith of Riverside-Albert, NB; one brother, Stanford (Myrtle) Young of Deer Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Cyril and Melville; three sisters, Thelma, Lois and Mona. Decosta was a life-long resident of Deer Island, and was a co-owner and co-founder of Fundy Construction Ltd. He was a self-employed weir fisherman as well and was a former MLA representing Charlotte County for 12 years from 1967 - 1978. He was a member of the Leonardville Church of Christ and for 30 years he held the positions of Elder and Deacon. He was an avid sportsman who loved hockey and played and coached the Deer Island Islanders for approximately 19 years, during which time they captured numerous championships. He also played baseball for a number of years as well. Decosta enjoyed hand-lining and fishing. He was a builder, enjoying woodworking and carpentry as a hobby, and building his own boat just a few years ago. He was a former member of the Orange Lodge in Deer Island before it closed. Decosta was a devoted statesman for Deer Island as he loved it as his home and promoted it as a great place to visit. His dedication and friendship will be missed by all who knew him. Resting at the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533), 26 Portage Street, St. George, NB with visiting on Saturday from 2-6 pm and Sunday at the Leonardville Church of Christ from 2-6 pm. Service will be held on Monday at 2 pm, followed by interment in the Fairhaven Community Cemetery at Calder's Head. In his memory, donations to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. (www.stgeorgefh.ca)
