JOHNSTON, R. ARLENE - Peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John NB, surrounded by her family, following a lengthy illness on August 20, 2008, Mrs. R. Arlene (Leighton) Johnston, wife of Clarence Johnston of Pennfield NB. Born at Beaver Harbour NB on April 24, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred and Glenna (Hawkins) Leighton. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Arlene is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Clarence, three sons; Perry Johnston (April Fraser) of Pennfield, Gerry (Lisa) Johnston of Lorneville NB and Jody Johnston (Shannan Waite) of Oak Bay NB, two daughters; Connie (Terry) Hurst and Gina (Barry) Leslie both of Pennfield, 8 grandchildren; Heather, Sarah, Ben, Melinda, Amanda, Gina, Jolene and Cheryl-Anne, four great grandchildren; Ashlynn, Memphis, Riley and Austin, five sisters; Frances Spear and Linda Holmes (John Bires) of Pennfield, Audrey (Eugene) Garnett of Saint John, Janet Leighton of Pennfield and Lana (Ricky) Polland of Back bay NB, three brothers; Edwin (Maria) Leighton of Pennfield, Reid (Joan) Leighton and Carson (Bonnie) Leighton both of Back Bay and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Arlene was predeceased by one grandson, Bobby-Lee Johnston. Arlene was a loving wife, mother, housewife and homemaker. She loved music, especially Bluegrass and Gospel. She enjoyed traveling as well as knitting and quilting and was an avid gardener. She was a member of the Pennfield Baptist Church and active in many church functions including "Our Servants" and the Choir. She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. A celebration of Arlene's life will be held at the Pennfield Baptist Church on Monday at 2:00 pm with the interment following at Pennfield Rural Cemetery.
