WINSTON MORTON

MORTON, WINSTON - John David Winston Morton, the son of the late Lloyd Morton and Kathleen (Ellis) Morton, died peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday evening, December 28, 2008 at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Perth-Andover, New Brunswick. Winston was born in Kincardine, Victoria County, NB on August 1, 1940 and attended the one-room school in that community and graduated from SVRHS in 1958. In high school he was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron 625, school choir, and soccer team and participated in other extracurricular school activities. He graduated from Teacher's College in 1960 and later received his education degree from UNB Fredericton after many years of summer school and night classes. He taught school in North Tilley, Upper Kent, and Bath and retired from teaching in 1995 after 34 years during which he coached soccer, taught science and social studies and other subjects. He was well respected by students and colleagues. He married his lifelong partner Isabel Fronie Hargrove on August 15, 1959 and they were blessed with five children whom they brought up in their home in Beechwood. Winston was a musician. He played the drums in The Mortons Band who played for dances, he sang bass in the Kincardine-Upper Kent Church Choir, the Burns Night Choir, and the group Family and Friends. He was a member of the Past Masters Unit of the Luxor Shriners, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in which he was a Past Master of Carleton Lodge #35. He received the Quinn Medallion and Mason of The Year Award in 1993. He served as secretary of Carleton Lodge #35. He was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Carleton Chapter #7 and Electa Chapter #9, serving as Worthy Patron for eight terms, and was The Grand Representative to Montana. Winston was a member of the New Brunswick Scottish Cultural Association, a member of the Kincardine-Upper Kent United Church where he served as Elder, Steward, and Treasurer for many years. He was also the Mission and Service Treasurer of the Andover-Kincardine Pastoral Charge, members of the choir, and the resident carpenter. Winston Morton lived life fully. He loved the outdoors - skidooing, hunting, fishing, and loved to go 'to the camp'. He was proud of his family's Scottish history; he was a great reader, a hard worker, and a good carpenter. He loved spending time with the family at the camps at Bolton Lake and West Glassville. He is survived by his wife Isabel, his mother Kathleen (Ellis) Morton, his children: Curtis (Debbie), Upper Kent; Kelly (Clay Davenport), Beechwood; Matthew (Raina), Virginia; Michelle (Abbie Landry), Salisbury; Craig (Donna) Keswick Ridge. Grandchildren: Nicholas and Landon Morton, Ryan DeMerchant and Jenelle Clark, Cameron and Callum Morton, Brock, Christian, and Ty Landry, Avery and Jack Morton. He is also survived by his siblings: Winifred (Charlie) Cameron; Allen (Sandra); Karen (Greg Peacock; Dale (Carolyn); Amber (David) Ashworth; Bonnie Darlene (Robert LaFrance); Darwin (Marie); Blair (Annette Tweedie) and many nieces and nephews, several aunts, an uncle, cousins, in-laws and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his father Lloyd Morton, infant siblings Bradley and Loreen, and infant grandchildren Alexa and Zachary Landry. The family will receive visitors at Faith Memorial United Church on Burham Road, Florenceville, Wednesday, December 31, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm with a Masonic service and Eastern Star service on Wednesday at 6:30 and 6:45 pm respectively. A memorial service to be held at that church on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev. Les Johnston officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Melville Cemetery, Kincardine. Memorial donations to the Kincardine-Upper Kent United Church, the Melville Cemetery, or a memorial of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family whose address is 10408 Route 105, Beechwood, NB E7J 2B3.
