We the family are broken hearted to announce the death of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at Taigh Na Mara Veterans Home, his home away from home for the past three years.
Joe, affectionately known as the “Mayor of Morien” was the son of the late Fredrick Peach and Susan (Martell) Peach of Port Morien. In his early years, he fished with his father before joining the Canadian Armed Services. Following the end of the Second World War, he returned to fishing and worked in construction with M.R. Chappell’s in Sydney. In 1958 he began working with the Devco Railway (Bridge and Building Department) where he retired after 28 years.
Joe’s favorite pastime was singing at any and all occasions. He was honoured in 2004 by St. Paul’s parish, Port Morien for over 50 years service as a choir member. He was an honorary member of the Coal Town Chorus and a member of the former “Morien Mello Tones.” Joe was also an honorary member of Branch 55 Canadian Legion, Port Morien and a long time member of the Port Morien Red Cross.
Left to mourn is his wife of 62 years, Joyce (Smith) Peach; his only daughter, Norma; sons, Claude (Donna), Millage (Phyllis), Stanley (Karen) and Fraser (Brenda); seven grandchildren, Tracey, Norma Dee, Terry Lee, Bonnie Jean, Jamie, Joel and Shea and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Melvin (Helen), Ted (Helen), Leroy (Barbara) and his sister, Alice; special God-daughter, Mary (Strutters) MacLeod and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Lewis, Gordon, George, Aulay and Turner; sisters, Frances, Sarah, Beatrice and step-granddaughter, Jackie Kennedy.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service to be held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 at 2 p.m., St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Morien with Reverend Vernon Reid officiating. There will be a reception to follow at the Port Morien Legion, Community Center.
Family flowers only, in lieu of flowers memorials may be placed in Joe’s memory to St. Paul’s parish, Port Morien, the DVA Veteran’s Comfort Fund, or the Alzheimer’s Society.
