AYLES, JUSTICE LEWIS C., Q.C. - Justice Lewis C. Ayles, Q.C., (August 28, 1927 - October 21, 2009) It is with great sadness that the family of Lewis Charles Ayles, 82, announce his passing on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, N.B. Born in Atholville, N.B. on August 28, 1927, he was the son of the late Clifford and Evelyn Ayles (Landry). He is also predeceased by sister, Marjorie Fauteaux (Leo) of Montreal and his brother, Clifford Ayles of Atholville. Lewis had a long and distinguished career, admitted to the bar in 1952, he practiced law in Campbellton until 1971. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the constituency of Campbellton in 1967 and was appointed to the Provincial Court in 1971. In 1983, he was appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench, Family Division and in 1985, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal in New Brunswick where he sat until he retired in 2002. He also served as New Brunswick's first Chairman of the Insurance Board in 2004 in which he served for 18 months. In November 2004, he was appointed to Queens Council by the lieutenant-governor in New Brunswick. Lewis is survived by his loving wife, Therese (Bourque) to whom he was married for 58 years, his seven children, Richard Ayles (Denise) of Campbellton, N.B., Louise Wirtanen (Peter) of Upper-Stewiacke N.S., John Ayles (Sheona) of Quesnel, B.C., Susan Scott (Paul) of Halifax, N.S., Jeffrey Ayles (Gisele) of Brampton Ont., Patricia Scruton (Doug) of Mississauga, Ont., and Chares Ayles of Fredericton N.B. Lewis was especially proud of his seven children and his 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Jesse, Michael, Natasha, Adam, Heather, Mark, Jennice, Jenna Theresa, Alex, Kyle, Nicola, Justin, Jordan, Conor, Anthony and Ashley. Throughout his life, Lewis had many interests and pursued them all with passion. An avid card player, he enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren the art of betting 25 without the 5. Lewis enjoyed discussing current events and the impact that they had in his own province and around the world. In later years, he spent his winters in Florida with Therese and developed a strong friendship with a group of snowbirds from New Brunswick. Husband, father of seven, grandfather of 15 and great grandfather of two, he will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 25 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral arrangements are being managed through Maher's Funeral Home in Campbellton, N.B. and the funeral to celebrate his life will be held at 11 am at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Church on Monday, October 26, 2009. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
