The family of Leo Nolan is deeply saddened to announce his peaceful passing on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Leo was the son of the late Michael and Sarah (Moore) Nolan of Caledonia. He was a hardworking family man who worked many years for Devco retiring in 1989 after many years of service. He was extremely independent and spoke his mind, but also had a great sense of humor and quick wit that put a smile on many faces.
Leo was a real sports enthusiast, especially bowling and attained many trophies and awards. He loved to attend all community sporting events where he made lasting friendships. Leo and family spent some years in California and it became his home away from home.
In his later years, he was happy spending time with is great grandchildren whom he loved dearly. To sum up Leo’s personality, we will quote his sister Ernie: “Leo was always a gentleman”. We will miss you Da and you will never be forgotten.
Leo is survived by his loving wife, Verus ‘Bubs’ (Kelly); daughters, Leona, Glace Bay, Caroline (Roger) Bannister, California, Denise (Gerard) McNeil, Glace Bay, Cecelia, Ottawa; cherished grandchildren, Laurie (Charlie) Nicholls, Ottawa, Shawn Marsden, Alberta; great grandchildren, Rebecca and Nolan Ratchford and Cameron Ferguson. Also surviving are sisters, Mellie Boyce, Sydney, Ernie (George) Penny, Halifax, Charlena MacMullin, Ottawa; brothers, Joe (Emma), Glace Bay, Terence, Halifax and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret, Etta, Anne, Christie; brothers, Billy, John ‘Jit’ and Angus.
In honoring Leo’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009 at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be held at a later date in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
