
ALFRED HARRIOTT
HARRIOTT, ALFRED, CDR, CD RET'D. - 83, passed away peacefully in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, on December 16, 2009. Born in Iselworth, Middlesex, England, he was a son of the late Alfred and Annie (Brown) Harriott. "Alf", as he like to be called, was one of the "Guest Children" who came to Canada because of the bombing in London. In 1940 he was placed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Fowler of Hampton, N.B. for the rest of the war. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1943 and joined the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve and served until his discharge in 1946 at the end of the Second World War. Alf decided to remain in Canada and attend University of New Brunswick to study Civil Engineering. In 1949 Alf joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in The Korean Conflict in 1954. In 1956, Alf transferred to the new Civil Engineering branch of the Royal Canadian Navy. During this time he served in Vietnam on the International Commission for Control and Supervision of Vietnam. Alf retired from the RCN in 1977. He then worked for the maintenance Department of the Dartmouth District School Board from 1978 till 1990. He is survived by his wife, the former Doreen Cosman; daughter, Christine (Mrs. Bruce Bosdet), Kamloops, B.C.; grandchildren, Geoffrey Bosdet, Stephen Bosdet, Benjamin Gahagan, Claire Gahagan; brothers, Len and Hugh of Rothesay, N.B., and Frank of Fredericton. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Gahagan; brothers, Cyril and Derek. Cremation has taken place under the direction of A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11 am, Monday, December 21 in Woodlawn United Church, Rev. Phillip and Valerie Kennedy officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at sea.
