It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Violet ‘Lou’ O’Brien, 80, on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at her residence on 49 Eighth St., Glace Bay, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Cassie (Cameron) Walsh.
Ma was the backbone of the family, always available with a warm welcome, a listening ear and wonderful words of wisdom and advice for all of us. You could be sure their door was always open and the teapot was always on. From the comfort of her rocker with dad always beside her, she made each and everyone feel welcome in her home.
Lou is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Alphonse. She will be sadly missed by her six daughters and four sons. They include, Marie (Ike) Egerdeen, Ontario, daughter-in-law, Karen O’Brien, Jack (Nancy), Annette, Wayne (Martha), Mickey (Gloria), Donna (Marty) O’Donnell, Sheila (Mike) Burke, Vera (Joe) O’Donnell, Paula (Johnnie) Parsons, all of Glace Bay, Lloyd (Sam), Halifax and daughter-in-law, Patricia MacDonald, Antigonish. Also surviving are four sisters, Stasia, Rita, Nellie, Florence, all of Ontario; along with many nieces and nephews. Violet ‘Lou’ was ‘Proud Nan’ of 36 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
Besides her parents, Violet was predeceased by a daughter, Patsy, three sons, Kevin, Phonsie, Tommy, one great-grandson and great-granddaughter and two brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Leo Boone will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. Fellowship will follow in the parish hall.
Violet will be interred in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to Palliative Care.
